GOOD TO BE BACK

GOOD TO BE BACK

Fresh off the bye week, the No. 5 Hornets hit the ground running at San Bernardino Valley College Thursday night shutting out the Wolverines 58-3.

The history between these two classic JUCO teams goes back to 1926 when Fullerton first paid a visit to San Berdoo and lost 25-0. Last year, Fullerton hosted the Wolverines at Yorba Linda High and won that game 49-6. After tonight, FC now leads the overall series 23-14.

Both teams laid a goose egg with the first quarter ending in a 0-0 tie. The second quarter saw an explosive offensive output by Fullerton scoring 37 unanswered points for a new record for the largest amount scored in a quarter. The previous record of 36 was set in 2017 against Grossmont College.

FC quarterback Brandon Nunez threw an incredible 4 touchdown passes to Aiden Koenig (24 yards), Malik Winston (14 yards), Cameron Woods (14 yards), and Koenig again (81 yards). The Hornets also scored on a team safety and on a 1-yard run by Taj Gregory.

FC welcomed the third quarter with a 3-play drive that ended with a 2-yard run by Malik Winston. The touchdown was set up by a great pass from Nunez to Darian Fletcher for 31 yards. The Hornets put the ball into the end zone two more times before the end of the quarter on 34-run run by Garnett Davis and a 10-yard scamper by Edwin Udengwu.

San Bernardino broke the Fullerton shutout attempt at the start of the fourth quarter thanks a 25-yard field goal by Brian Batres.

Hornet QB Brandon Nunez ended the big night going 11-15 for 258 yards with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Taj Gregory led the ground attack rushing for 93 yards on 11 carries with a TD. Wideout Aidan Koenig also put up some impressive numbers catching 5 passes for 155 yards and 2 TDs. The FC defense held the Wolverines to 70 yards passing and 128 rushing, while forcing 5 turnovers for the win.

Up Next: No. 5 in state Fullerton (5-1 overall, 1-0 Southern) will bring it back home on Saturday, October 22nd when they face off with Southwestern College at Fullerton Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:00 pm.
