No. 6 Roadrunners Come Up Short at No. 2 San Mateo

San Mateo, Calif. - Sophomore quarterback Tanner Hughes chalked up another pair of touchdowns, but the No. 6 Butte football team came up short at No. 2 San Mateo, 28-21, on Saturday afternoon.

Hughes scored on a quarterback keeper in the third quarter before connecting with sophomore Jailen Hammer as the final seconds of the game ticked away. On the day, Hughes went 13-for-24 for 157 yards.

The two teams battled back and forth on the windy day in the Bay Area, matching scores with each other until back-to-back San Mateo touchdowns in the fourth quarter. 

Sophomore running back Caleb Ramseur tallied the first score for the Roadrunners on a 23-yard run late in the first half of his 148 total rushing yards. He posted the longest run of the day, breaking free in the second half on a 61-yard attempt. He also led the receiving corp with six receptions for 59 yards.

Defensively, freshmen Malcolm Dewalt tallied seven solo tackles, including one for a loss of two yards. Returning to the lineup, sophomore Grant Garretson tallied five tackles with three marked for loss. Freshman Cody Carlson earned three tackles and the team's lone sack for a loss of seven yards.

On special teams, sophomore Dante Jackson averaged 43.7 yards per punt with all three downed in the 20.

Butte (3-2) has a bye week before returning home to open National NorCal play, hosting Santa Rosa on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. The game is also the "I Wear Pink for ____" contest in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Roadrunners are partnering with the Enloe Cancer Center for the second year with part of the proceeds of t-shirt and ticket sales being donated to the Enloe Comprehensive Cancer Center Care fund.
