Vikings sharp in scrimmage with Slugs, turn attention to Mounties

With the 2019 season opener just a week away, the West Valley men's soccer team scrimmaged UC Santa Cruz in a final preseason tuneup Saturday at Dick Schwendinger Field. The Vikings dominated their NCAA D3 opponents, spending most of the 90 minutes on the UCSC half of the pitch with an efficient offense and smothering defense. Coach Gaspar Silviera's side is now focused on the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties, who invade Saratoga Aug. 31 for a battle of CCCAA powerhouses. The Vikings have captured back-to-back Coast Conference titles, while the Mounties won the 2016 state championship and are annual playoff participants. Kickoff Saturday is 1:00pm.
