(Walnut, CA) After a close first half, the visiting Santiago Canyon Hawks outscored Mt. SAC, 44-33, and came away with an 84-66 non-conference victory Wednesday (Nov. 20).

With the loss, the Mounties fell to 2-6 overall, while Santiago Canyon remains undefeated at 8-0 with a No. 5 ranking in the CCCAA State rankings.

Leading the Mounties with a game-high 26 points was freshman guard Kalique Mitchell (10 for 17 FGM, 6-6 FTM, 7 REB). Freshman guard Collin Reed (3 for 7 3PFG, 5-6 FTM, 10 REB) added 20 points, while guard Josh Jastrab (2 for 5 3PFG, 6 REB) and forward Gerald Jordan (3 for 5 FGM, 7 REB) had six points each.

The Mounties were tied with Santiago Canyon, 26-26 after the second of two 3-pointers by Jastrab with 3:28 left in the opening half.

The Hawks then went on a 14-7 run to end the half and built up a 40-33 halftime lead.

Reed led the Mounties with 12 first-half points, while Mitchell had nine.

Mitchell then came alive in the second half with 17 points, but was the only Mountie player in double figures. Reed was the only other player close to double figures in the half with eight points.

"Once I got hot, I just kept going," said Mitchell, whose family was visiting from Staten Island, New York. "We came out with a punch and they punched us back in the face after they called the first time out. From there it was neck and neck. In the second half they came back with the finisher.

"We tried our hardest, but it just wasn't enough to win."

Mt. SAC's next games come in their annual Mountie Classic Friday - Sunday (Dec. 6-8). The first game on Friday is against College of the Desert. Game time is 7:00 pm.
