Vikings Top Cabrillo 3-2 Behind Strong Outing From Hurlers

Zach Smits scored the winning run on a Cabrillo error in the bottom of the fourth to boost the West Valley baseball team to a 3-2 win over the Seahawks at the Gary Engleken Tournament at Yuba College Thursday night. Smits, who had singled to open the fourth, came home on an Eric Ochoa grounder that was mishandled by Cabrillo 3B Rob Carling. The Vikings (3-2) enjoyed a good outing from their pitching staff, highlighted by starter Nick Johnson, who evened his season mark at 1-1 with a four-hit, two-K performance in four innings. Sebastian Selway held the Seahawks (2-5) scoreless in three innings of relief, and Matt Remmel struck out the side in the eighth. Jared Espinosa retired the side in the ninth for the save. Nate Petrov was 2-3 with an RBI, Kyle Ochoa had a double and Cale Thompson blasted a triple. For the Seahawks, Rylan Gordon (1-2) took the loss and Jonah Shabry was 3-4 with an RBI. WVC takes on Feather River (5-3) at 5:00pm today on day two of the Engleken Tourney.
