Comets start conference with 5-2 win over Griffins

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/27/2020) – Palomar snapped their two-game losing streak to defeat Grossmont College 5-3 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference opener.

The Comets got two runs in the second after being retired in order in the first. Palomar then went on to leave the bases loaded five times to strand 15 baserunners.

With the score knotted at two apiece, Palomar was desperate to bring in more runs. Fortunately for them everything clicked in the eighth inning to bring in three more runs. Following a leadoff double by Brandon Luna, Brady Lavoie doubled to score Luna for the go-ahead run. Lavoie then advanced to third on a balk and then scored on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter, Derek Bostater singled and then stole second. After a pitching change, Cameron Rowles singled to score Bostater for the final Comet run.

Dane Padrnos was the starting pitcher for Palomar. Facing 21 batters, he allowed two runs on five hits. Gavin Kinney was the winning pitcher and moves to 2-0 on the season. He faced 17 batters and allowed four hits and struck out one.

The Comets move to 5-10 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 29 for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
