Zoe Mendez clubbed a game-winning home run in the top of the seventh to lift the West Valley softball team to a 3-2 win at American River Friday.

The Vikings (6-0) stayed unbeaten thanks to the Mendez solo shot, a sixth-inning RBI double from Hannah Hillman, another complete-game gem from Cayla Williams, and their sixth consecutive double-digit hit total.

After the Beavers (2-3) grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Hillman tied it up with a two-bagger that knocked in Megumi Pennebaker. Mendez cleared the fence with the game-clincher, West Valley's tenth hit, an inning later.

Williams improved to 4-0 with the eight-strikeout one hitter that helped elevate the Vikings to the top of the NorCal RPI rankings. Pennebaker finished 2-3, while Mendez was 2-4.

The Vikings head to Rocklin Feb. 8 to take on perrenial NorCal power Sierra (4-2) and then return to Saratoga for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. WVC and Redwoods tangle Friday(2/14) at noon and 2pm. It will be a battle of the Vikings Saturday (2/15) as Diablo Valley (3-3) comes to town for a noon and 2pm twin bill.
