Late Push Helps Wolverines Past Barstow

After losing two in a row, the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team knew it needed a win in its final regular season home game to get back on track before the postseason starts.

And, after a slow start, the Wolverines picked up the pace in the second half and pulled away from Barstow College for an 85-65 victory Wednesday night.

SBVC went into the half only leading 29-26 after only shooting 41.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes. But the offense, led by Brandon Betson, found its groove in the second half. The Wolverines shot 58.3 percent in the half, with Betson making 8-of-14 shots (4-of-8 from 3-point range) en route to a 20-point performance in the second half, after a 1-for-7 first half that saw him make one 3-pointer. He finished with a team-high 23 points with five assists.

The rest of the team got into the act, as five more players scored in double figures on the evening. Jaren Williams led things off the bench with 14 points, while K'Lon Williams added 12 more off the bench. Cameron Butler had 12 points and eight rebounds, Jordan Jones added 11 points and nine rebounds and Cartrell Thompson also had 11 points and nine rebounds. Nathan Pendarvis had nine assists as well.

Barstow's Josh Tawhiao led all scorers with 32 points, as the Vikings were held without a free-throw attempt in the game.
