Kiana Manson completes an improbable up for a point against USF

The most memorable single image was Kiana Manson's up-of-the-year in the first match, but it was a total team effort that lifted West Valley beach to 4-1 and 3-2 wins over the visiting University of San Francisco Friday. The wins were the first ever for WVC against an NCAA opponent and gave a glimpse of West Valley's potential heading into the rugged Coast Conference season.

Match one was tied 1-1 after the first wave. WVC 2's Taylor Tullo and Elia Duenas battled to a 21-11, 17-21, 15-8 win over USF's Katie Wagstaff/Tanner Pemberton, while Keilli Voss and Kate Blackwell fell 19-21, 17-21 to Lana Kutakhina/Bruna Correa in the 4's.

The Vikings swept the second wave 3-0 for the 4-1 match victory. Kiana Manson and Sydney Rogers held off Francesca Stanchus and Sara Denham 21-13, 24-22 in the 5's, while Camdyn Albrecht and Alina Valenti took the 3's with a 21-19, 21-18 win over Sophie Sydenham /Shyia Richardson. In the 1's, West Valley's Katie Kishton and Flor Porras took care of Orsula Staka/Leti Aquilino 21-13, 21-17.

In the late match, the Vikings (4-0) and the Dons (0-2) were again deadlocked 1-1 after the first wave and it took two gritty comebacks to clinch the win. Tullo and Duenas dropped their 2's match with Sydenham/Richardson 21-15, 21-13, but Voss and Blackwell rebounded form their match-one loss with a 15-21, 21-19, 15-10 reverse-sweep win over Denham/Stanchus.

USF's Katakhina/Correa gave the Dons a 2-1 match lead with a 21-18, 21-11 win over Manson and Abby McCormick in the 5's, but Kishton and Porras evened it up with a tight 21-18, 21-18 victory over Aquilino and Staka in the 1's. The match of the day decided match two, as Albrecht and Valenti took an epic 16-21, 21-19, 15-11 reverse-sweep thriller over Pemberton and Wagstaff in the 3's for the clincher.

The Vikings are off until March 4 when they travel to Sierra for matches against the Wolverines (1-1) and Feather River (3-1).
