WOMEN'S WATER POLO: GOING TO THE SHIP!

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: GOING TO THE SHIP!

On Friday afternoon, the No. 1 (South) Lady Hornets knocked off No. 2 (North) Sierra College 8-3 to advance to the 2019 CCCAA State Championship game.

It was a sweet-revenge-win for Fullerton after Sierra got past the Hornets 7-6 in overtime in last season's State Championship game.

The Hornets now have a chance to win their second state championship in program history. The first title came in 2014 when the Hornets went an undefeated 35-0 under Head Coach Gabriel Martinez. Tomorrow's game also marks the fourth time that FC has played in the title game.

The game did not start in Fullerton's favor as they were held scoreless in the first quarter, the only time this season. On the good side, the Wolverines were only able to tack one goal up on the scoreboard on a shot by Angie Calzada.

Sierra opened up the second quarter with another goal by Calzada to go up 2-0, but the Hornets went on to score 3 unanswered goals by before the end of the half. Abigail Nunez pumped in a goal, while Bryanna Santis tossed in 2 goals giving Fullerton a 3-2 lead at the break.

Charley Jackson put FC up 4-2 off of a nice rebound effort.

Calzada scored her third and last goal of the day as the Hornet defense clamped down preventing any more goals for the remainder of the game.

Fullerton's Kelly Doherty went on to score 3 consecutive goals (1 in the third quarter and 2 in the fourth). Diana Leivas forced in the last goal of the day to clinch the game for the Hornets.

Up Next: Two Orange Empire Conference teams will fight it out for a chance to win the 2019 CCCAA State Title after Riverside beat No. 1 (North) West Valley today 10-4. No. 1 (South) Fullerton (31-3 overall) will play No. 2 (south) Riverside City College (28-6 overall) at Golden West College on Saturday, November 23rd at 1:30 pm. The Hornets and Tigers have played one another five times this season with Fullerton owning the season series 4-1.
