Women’s Basketball: Rio Hondo wins two at IVC Crossover tourney

It was a successful weekend in Irvine for the Rio Hondo College women's basketball team. The Roadrunners were dominant in a pair of victories, beating Barstow Community College 82-30 on Friday before cruising to a 76-30 victory over South Coast Conference foe Cerritos College on Saturday.

Rio Hondo has won four straight contests, including six of its last seven games, to improve to 9-3 overall this season.

Sally Smith scored a game-high 20 points off the bench in leading Rio Hondo to the 52-point win over Barstow. The Roadrunners turned up the pressure on defense to total 31 steals while Barstow committed 52 turnovers.

Barstow actually held an early 6-5 lead before the Roadrunners outscored the Vikings 21-2 to close out the first quarter. They extended that run with 23 straight points to open the second to go ahead 38-8 at the 6:26 mark.

Smith added 7 steals, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists while Candace Black scored 12 points. Donteylor Maxwell added 10 points while Amanda Lee posted 8 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals.

The Roadrunners continued their impressive play on Saturday, beating Cerritos by 46 points. Rio Hondo led 24-14 after the first quarter and held the Falcons to just 16 points for the remainder of the game.

Rio Hondo had four players score in double figures. Smith led they way with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lee (16 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals), Maxwell (14 points), and Jennyfer Morales (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks) all contributed to the big win.

The Roadrunners will look to keep their impressive run going on Thursday (Dec. 12) when they begin play at the West Hills College Lemoore tournament.
