SBCC started the 2020 season in style on Friday, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings of an 11-2 victory over West L.A. in Culver City.
Kyle Froemke, Jacob Bravo and Brandon Lawrence all homered for Santa Barbara in a seven-run second-inning eruption. All seven runs came with two outs and six were unearned.
Four Vaquero pitchers struck out 12 and walked just one. Blake Corsentino, a sophomore right-hander from Ventura High, went the first three innings and got the win. He allowed no runs on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
West L.A. committed three errors, leading to six unearned runs. The Vaqueros benefitted from 14 free passes on 12 walks and two hit batters.
Catcher Alonzo Rubalcaba paced the Vaqueros' 10-hit offense, going 2-3 with two doubles in the second and third innings. His three-run double in the third boosted the lead to 10-0. Froemke, a sophomore shortstop who transferred from Oregon, went 2-4 with a two-run homer in the second.
Zach Jensen, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, was 2-3 with an RBI. He scored the first run of the year in the second when he walked, went to second on Trevor Davis' infield single, to third on a double play and came home on a balk.
After an error on the pitcher extended the inning, Froemke unleashed a two-run homer to left and Bravo followed with a solo shot to right to make it 4-0. Rubalcaba doubled to chase starter Braydon Williams and scored on a single by Noah Williamson. Lawrence, a freshman second baseman from Dunn School, stroked a two-run homer to left to cap the seven-run uprising.
The Vaqueros sent 12 batters to the plate in the second and 10 reached base.
The Vaqueros will host West L.A. in their home opener on Saturday at Pershing Park with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
