Cypress Celebrates Sophomore Night with 64-50 Victory

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's basketball (18-10, 9-3 OEC) hosted the Santa Ana Dons (7-20, 0-12 OEC) in the regular season finale. The Chargers celebrated sophomore night with an exciting 64-50 victory. The Chargers will enter the playoffs next week winning eight of their last ten games as they are poised to make a run at the state championship. 

The Chargers were led by Alexcia Alvarez (19 points), Malia Goldsmith (18 points) and Thao Truong (13 points). Alvarez came up with 8 rebounds and 4 steals on the defensive end. Keekee Hood was excellent off the bench as she came up with 6 offensive rebounds and 7 rebounds in total for the game. Patricia Lantin was just as dominant on the glass coming up with 8 rebounds on the night. 

The Dons came out firing early as they grabbed a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter after knocking down four three-pointers. The Chargers turned it around in the second quarter outscoring Santa Ana 20-10. Malia Goldsmith poured in 10 points and Alexcia Alvarez added 9 of her own in the quarter. After trailing by one point at halftime Cypress continued their offensive aggression scoring 22 points in the third quarter. After a strong defensive second half the Chargers were able to maintain a comfortable lead and win 64-50. 

UP NEXT: The Charger basketball season will continue next week as the first round of the CCCAA playoffs takes place on Tuesday, March 1st. Cypress will await selection Sunday to see who their playoff opponent will be.
