Women's Basketball: #1 ranked DVC holds off Bear Cubs

             For their last regular season home game, the Bear Cubs (11-12, 7-7) played host to the top team in the Big 8, the Vikings (25-1, 13-1) of Diablo Valley College. The Vikings opened the game with a 3-pointer by Zahria Hendrix and a layup off a Bear Cub turnover in the first 35 seconds. Maiya Flores took the Bear Cubs' first shot with 9:04 on the clock and swished the 3-pointer. The Vikings made their next two shots--both 3-pointers--to run out to an 11-3 lead. Jasmine Henderson scored the next three points on a drive at the 7:15 mark and one free throw 28 seconds later. Jahnay Anderson made her second 3-pointer within 25 seconds. During the next two and half minutes the Bear Cubs cut their deficit to 14-17 by making four field goals in a row--Shayla Newman's put back, Cammie Barsuglia's driving underhand 4-footer, Jasmine Henderson's fast break layup and her easy bucket on a baseline inbound's play--while the Anderson sank another 3-pointer. The Vikings scored the next four points on a field goal and two free throws before Maiya Flores scored on a back door cut with 1:30 left. The Vikings then sank their sixth 3-pointer and a field goal with 57 seconds remaining. DJ Hayes scored on a driving layup with 14 seconds to go to put the score at 18-26.

            The Vikings scored first in the second quarter when Henrix drained a 3-pointer with 8:16 on the clock and followed it up with Anderson's field goal the next time down. Jasmine Henderson's 3-pointer got the Bear Cubs' scoring going at the 7:33 mark. The Vikings went on a 9-0 run before Shayla Newman's put back with 4:23 left. A field goal by Leilani Moncrease and a 3-pointer by Anderson increased their lead to 45-23 with two minutes left. In the remaining time Lilly Orozco and Maiya Flores each made one field goal, and Moncrease and Sierra Smith each hit one to make the halftime score 49-27 in favor of the visitors.

            Maiya Flores started the third quarter the way she did the first--with a 3-pointer. Jasmine Henderson drew a shooting foul on a drive and made both free throws. The Vikings scored their first two points on a field goal at the 7:47 mark, and then made another one about a minute later. The Bear Cubs made their next four shots in a row, all lay ups, on drives by Maiya Flores, DJ Hayes and Jasmine Henderson, and a give-and-go from Hayes to Shayla Newman back to Hayes. Hayes and Henderson were both fouled on their drives and both completed the 3-point plays. The ten points came against seven by the Vikings to make their lead 60-42 with 2:58 left. With 1:01 on the clock, Smith drew a shooting foul. The Diablo Valley coach said something to one of the officials, words were exchanged, and he was given a technical foul, more things were said, and he was quickly ejected. Britta Irvine went to the free throw line to shoot two. She missed the first but made the second. Play resumed with Smith shooting two. She made both. Lilly Orozco made the final point when she made her second free throw with 48 seconds left, leaving the score at 44-62.

            Anderson was fouled on the first shot attempt of the fourth quarter and made one free throw. Maiya Flores dropped in a one-handed 7-footer on the Bear Cubs' first possession. Following Moncrease's field goal, the Bear Cubs ran off 7 unanswered points on Flores' baseline inbound's play bucket, Britta Irvine's pull-up 14-footer, and Jasmine Henderson's 3-pointer to close the gap to 53-65 after three minutes of play. Then the Vikings turned the tables on the home team with their own 12-3 run during the next four minutes, as the Bear Cubs only scored on Maiya Flores' 3-pointer with 4:20 left. DJ Hayes drew a shooting foul on a drive and made one free throw with 1:48 remaining. Lilly Orozco tallied the final Bear Cubs' points when she swished a baseline 12-footer 39 seconds later. Hendrix added one more field goal for the Vikings with just under a minute to make their margin of victory 79-59.

            The Bear Cubs were outscored 23-9 in the second quarter as they made only 4 out of 16 shots (25%) and turned the ball over 9 times. The Vikings made 9 out of 17 shots (53%), including two 3-pointers and all three of their free throws. The Bear Cubs could have picked up more ground in the third quarter, but they only got off 8 shots, of which they sank 5, due to 10 turnovers. For the game the Bear Cubs turned the ball over 27 times compared to the Vikings' 7. The Bear Cubs made 23 out of 60 shots (38%) with 5 3-pointers, while the Vikings put in 30 out of 65 (46%) with 11 from beyond the arc. Four Vikings scored in double figures: Anderson, who made 6 3-pointers, had 23 points, Moncrease 16, Smith 14, and Hendrix 10.

            Maiya Flores, who sank three 3-pointers and 5 out of 7 field goal attempts, led the Bear Cubs with 19 points. Jasmine Henderson hit two 3-pointers, 4 field goals and 4 out of 5 from the free throw line to finish with season-high 18 points. DJ Hayes added 8 points, Lilly Orozco 5, Shayla Newman 4, Britta Irvine 3, and Cammie Barsuglia 2. Shayla Newman grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Cammie Barsuglia passed for 6 assists and Maiya Flores for 4.
