Porterville goes 1-1 at College of Alameda Cougar Classic

A day after splitting its matches on opening-day at the Monterey Peninsula Classic tournament, the Porterville College women's volleyball team put together a repeat performance by going 1-1 at the 10th annual Cougar Classic at the College of Alameda on Saturday.

The Pirates opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Las Positas College before bouncing back with a 3-0 sweep of its own over host Alameda. Porterville is now 2-2 overall this season.

PC was edged 25-22 in the opening set against Las Positas and dropped the final two sets 25-15, 25-15. Madison Doty led the offense with six kills while Kuea Angilau added five kills.

Karissa Jones posted 11 digs and Jordan Castaneda had a team-high eight assists and two aces.

The Pirates closed the day on a high note, earning a 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 victory over Alameda. Emily Kissick had a huge match for PC, posting a match-high 11 kills.

Doty added six kills and a pair of blocks while Jones led Porterville with 10 digs and Castaneda had 13 assists.

The Pirates return to action on Sep. 13 for the fifth of nine straight matches on the road to open the season. PC will play two at the Sac City Classic, facing host Sacramento City College at 1 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. match against Mission College.

The two-day trip continues for Porterville as they continue to head north to Mendocino College for the Mendocino Classic on Sep. 14. PC is scheduled for three matches, facing College of the Redwoods at 10:30 a.m., College of the Siskiyous at 2 p.m., and Lassen Community College at 4 p.m.
