Long Beach goes 3-1 at Riverside Tournament

The Long Beach City College women's water polo team won three out of its four games over the weekend at the Riverside City College Tournament. The two-day event was hosted by Citrus College in Glendora.

Long Beach opened play on Friday with a 16-7 victory over Saddleback College and cruised to a 13-1 rout of Golden West College. The Vikings suffered just their second loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Orange Coast College 9-4 before bouncing back with a 15-8 win against host Riverside.

The Saddleback game started close, as LBCC held a narrow 3-2 advantage after the first quarter. But the Vikings outscored the Bobcats 5-1 in the second and never looked back.

Nine different Vikings scored in the win, led by five goals from Kaya Barrett. Sydney Brouwer, Samantha Jreisat, and Madison Marshall all had two goals each. Haden Bates posted 10 saves in goal for LBCC.

Long Beach had a much easier time against Golden West as the Vikings stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the first and held the Rustlers scoreless over the second half.

Rachel Westphal and Scout Bates scored three times each to lead LBCC while Haden Bates made seven saves in the near-shutout.

LBCC saw its six-game winning streak come to an end against Orange Coast. OCC held the Vikings scoreless over the first two quarters and built up a 4-0 lead that they couldn't overcome.

Chayma Hlanadif, Rylie Guglielmotti, Westphal, and Natalie Ramirez all scored for Long Beach. Bates had four saves in goal.

The Vikings were able to close the weekend on a positive note with a come-from-behind win over Riverside. LBCC trailed 8-7 at halftime but shutout the Tigers over the final two quarters to pull out the impressive victory.

Westphal had five goals to lead LBCC. Hlanadif scored four times while Amara Maxwell contributed two goals and four assists. Bates came up big with 12 saves in the game.

Long Beach is now 7-2 overall and returns to action on Wednesday (Sep. 22) when the Vikings host El Camino College in a 1:30 p.m. South Coast Conference game. The match will be played at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Base.
