KNIGHTS TAKE SECOND IN SHASTA INVITATIONAL

REDDING, Calif. – The Knights finished in second place in the Shasta College Invitational over the weekend.

Shasta College got a first-round bye and beat Yuba College 65-46 in the semifinal before losing to Fresno 59-55 in the tournament championship.

In the semifinal, the Knights held the edge in field goal percentage (50-26), rebounds (32-15) and assists (16-2). Four of Shasta's five starters scored in double figures, led by Mari Fernandez's 16 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Justyse Cooper had 14 points and eight rebounds, Kayla Bonomini scored 11 points and Jordan Martinez scored 11 points to go with her team-high six assists.

In the final against Fresno – the No. 10 team in NorCal – Shasta trailed 33-31 at half and was outscored 13-12 in each of the final two periods. Fernandez once again paced the Knights with a double-double, dropping 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cooper pitched in with 12 points and seven boards, Bonomini scored 11 points, Keeley Tuggle added a team-best 12 rebounds and Martinez had four steals.

Shasta (5-3) plays in the Solano College Tournament on Friday.
