Grossmont College baseball scored 5 in the first inning against the Golden West Rustlers Saturday, February 1, 2020.
Playing LF was Terrence Simmons, 2B Kiichi Sato, RF Darien Cossio, 3B Sean McGrew, 1B Billy Tellous, SS Elijah Jackson, C Adam Martinez, CF Dante Juliano, and pitching for the Griffins was Daniel Verdugo.
The end of the 2nd found the Griffins with one additional run, 6-0.
It was a quick 3rd inning, with Golden West and Grossmont batting three fast outs.
The top of the 4th found pitcher #11 Verdugo with two swinging strikeouts. After a base on balls, Verdugo threw a pop out to CF for the third out.
The bottom of the 4th started with Simmons striking out. Sato grounded out to first, and then Cossio grounding out to first also.
Verdugo struck out the first Rustler in the top of the 5th, then threw a pop up for two outs, and finally the third with another strike out.
McGrew swung a long one, but not long enough and started the bottom of the 5th with an out. Tellous, patient in the box, struck out swinging. Designated hitter Brandon Glowacki connected with the ball, but grounded out to first.
#23 Jagger Acosta steps onto the pitcher's mound to start the 6th. His first out is a ground out to first, followed by a strikeout! After a base on balls, Griffin catcher, Martinez, advances the runner to second on a passed ball. 2B hit after that, bringing in a Rustler point (6-1). The Griffin's third out came after a ground out, short stop to first.
#21 Jackson struck out in the bottom of the 6th, followed by another strikeout (Martinez). #4 Dante Juliano hits a 1B. Simmons popped up for the third out.
Top of the 7th, and #28 Brad Barkley pitched an easy fly ball to right field. Barkley with a base on balls, 1B hit, strikeout, and another strikeout. Three outs!
Bottom of the 7th found the Griffins with a quick ground out (Sato), base on balls (Cossio), error by Golden West and out at 2nd, and then a ground out for the third out.
Top of the 8th and another Griffin pitcher #14 Tyler Lowrey. First out is a ground out from 2B to 1B. Lowrey pitches a 1B, then a ground out (5 to 3) for the second out. The runner at first advances to second. A 1B hit to left field brought home the Rustler runner from third, for a score of 6-2. Another 1B hit against Barkley and first and second base runners are ready. One strike, two strikes, three strikes and two left on base!
Designated hitter Glowacki grounded out to start the bottom of the 8th. Jackson lined left for the second out, and Martinez was tagged out at first.
The score remains 6-2, and it's the last chance for the Rustlers to catch up. Griffin #3 Zaine Mendoza takes the pitching mound. He gives up a hit by pitch base and then a base on balls, followed with a tag out for one out. Ground out to second for two outs, and the game ends with a strikeout!
