WVC takes 4th-straight undefeated Coast regular season crown with 16-1 win at LPC

The West Valley women's water polo team took care of business Wednesday afternoon, dominating Las Positas 16-1 for its fourth-consecutive undefeated Coast Conference regular season championship. The Vikings (23-1, 7-0 Coast) were in control from the start Wednesday, holding the Hawks (1-7, 1-4) scoreless until the 5:25 mark in the fourth quarter.

The CCCAA #1-ranked Vikings got three goals apiece from Kate Craig, Fatima Gonzalez Garcia, Kianna Melvin and Johanna Scheer. West Valley recorded a season-high 21 steals, led by Maria Higginbotham's seven, three from Melvin and two each from Craig, Gonzalez Garcia, Aaliyah Lax, Marie Lucquet and Paige McCroskey. WVC keeper Grace Smith improved to 20-1 on the season, stopping seven Hawk shots to give her a state-leading 273 saves and a state-high 72.8 save %. Scheer now has a CCCAA-best 90 goals.

Coach Erika Vargas's Vikings close out the regular season with their annual journey to the Santa Barbara City College Halloween Invitational Oct. 29-30. This year's tourney will showcase the top-ranked Vikings against #2 Santa Barbara (21-4) on 10/29 at 5pm, and then WVC vs. #10 Cerritos (16-5) at 1pm on 10/30.

The three-time defending champion Vikings then return to Saratoga for the Coast Conference Championship tournament Nov. 5-6 at the West Valley Aquatics Center. Games begin at 9:00am each day.
