No. 15 Football Knocks Off No. 1 San Francisco

Oroville, Calif. - Sophomore quarterback Tanner Hughes led the No. 15 Roadrunners to a 35-14 victory, knocking off No. 1 San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a 16-game winning streak for the defending state champions.

Hughes went 10-of-19 with 130 yards and four total touchdowns - two each passing and rushing. The Chico native scored the team's first touchdown on a short gain of three yards before adding an insurance score on a one-yard run late in the second quarter. He connected with freshman Tre Patterson as time expired going into the half on a 40-yard reception, followed by a 31-yard pass to sophomore Jailen Hammer to count the only points in the third quarter.

The Roadrunners scored early off of Valcarcel's long return and off the leg of sophomore Dante Jackson to take the early 3-0 lead with 11:34 remaining in the first quarter and never looked back, allowing a touchdown late in the first but ultimately scoring 26 straight points, including a safety on an intentional grounding penalty to start the fourth.

Sophomore Caleb Ramseur led the Roadrunner back field with 75 total rushing yards, while Hammer paced the receiver corp with three receptions for 44 total yards.

Defensively, three different Butte players earned a pick with freshman Zach Valcarcel posting a solid day with a 72-yard kickoff return to open the game and adding an interception later. Freshman Cameron Carr tallied his second pick of the season.

Overall, sophomore Elijah O'Neal counted 12 tackles - nine solo - including five sacks for 33 yards and seven total tackles for loss. Freshman Aiden Sullivan backed him up with four tackles, including his first career pick with a 30-yard return. 

The Roadrunners (2-1) head back out on the road, facing No. 17 Modesto on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
