ELAC Falls Short in Spoiling Mt. San Antonio's SCC North Bid in Final Game, 4-2

ELAC Falls Short in Spoiling Mt. San Antonio's SCC North Bid in Final Game, 4-2

The Huskies, locked into a 1-1 pitcher's duel for most of the game, were hoping to spoil Mt. San Antonio's bid to claim the South Coast Conference North title. But the Mounties' Michael Sandoval would break the game open by cracking a three-run homerun in the top of the eight inning en route to a 4-2 win at ELAC. Mt. SAC actually ended up sharing the top SCC North spot with Pasadena City College, who won earlier in the day at Cerritos, 9-3.

Despite not qualifying for postseason play, the Huskies had beaten Mt. SAC yesterday and were looking earn another victory to finish the season on a high-note. East LA starter Troy Maki (L, 5-4) held the Mounties to one run over the first seven innings. Then in the eigth, with two runners on, the shortstop Sandoval stepped to the plate. He would hit a long fly ball that cleared the fences, and the home plate umpire initially ruled the ball to have landed outside the foul pole. But after conferring with his first base fellow ump, he decided the ball landed inside the pole in fair territory - thus awarding Sandoval and Mt SAC the decisive homerun. ELAC added a run in the bottom of the inning but the comeback would fall short.

Mounties' pitcher Steven Ordorica came on in the fifth inning to relieve starter Matt Garcia and got the win (5-1). Michael Sandoval (2 for 4, 3RBI, homerun) led a trio of Mt SAC hitters that notched two hits apiece (Albert Luevano, Tyus Santa Anna). For the Huskies, designated hitter Robert Banuelos went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. First baseman AJ Gama went 1 for 4 with an RBI and run scored. Relief pitcher Francisco Avena took over for Maki after the Sandoval homer and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing no hits or walks.
