Men's soccer team rolls Southwestern for first win of year

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team had been a bit unlucky so far this season.

The Lasers faced one of the toughest schedules through four matches of any team in the state, facing perennial playoff teams in Rio Hondo, Fresno City, Hartnell and El Camino.

All IVC had to show for it was two draws and two one-goal losses.

But the Lasers proved just how good they are with a dominant performance on Friday in a 5-0 nonconference win over Southwestern at home.

Irvine Valley improved to 1-2-2 overall and Southwestern fell to 0-3-2.

Irvine Valley was on point from start to finish, scoring three goals in the first half on its way to the easy victory.

Irvine Valley got goals from a nice goal from freshman forward Benjamin Asabi off an assist from freshman midfielder Joshua Lummis in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

And just before the end of the first half, IVC scored two more times.

Sophomore midfielder Marco Peccolo rebounded his own penalty kick and finished in the 42nd minute and then freshman forward Max Kleinhammes scored to give Irvine Valley a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Freshman defender Chase Bouquet (off a corner kick) and sophomore midfielder Gibae Kim each scored in the second half to help put the win away. Lummis assisted again on Kim's goal.

Sophomore goalie had to make just three saves in helping IVC to the shutout.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday at San Diego Mesa at 3 p.m.
