McCray leads WEST with 29 points in win over SMC, 80-75

Culver City, CA:
Some fans who attended the Western States Conference contest between West LA and SMC
may have thought the game was over at the half. But someone forgot to tell the
Wildcat men's basketball team. West got off to an abymal start shooting just 1-8 from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats managed to only get 13 points from their starters in the first half. Daniel Estes led
WEST in the half shooting 5-8 for 10 points. SMC's Isaiah Simpson had his way off the bench, adding
18 for the Corsairs. SMC was a perfect 9-9 from the line and shot 7 of 16 from three point land.
WEST only managed six free throws, making just 2 for 33%.

Wildcat Head Coach Anthony Jones understands the game is played in two halves, not just one.
West LA turned up the defensive pressure, contesting the Corsair shooters and played smothering defense.
Santa Monica's Cesar Mesa's three pointer with 9:36 to go would be their only long range bomb of the half.
Santa Monica shot 1 for 15, just 6.7%. Equally impressive, the Wildcat defense held SMC in check from the floor,
as well. The Corsairs 11-49 shooting was only good for 22.4%.

Robinson pulled the trigger again and connected from beyond the arc, cutting the lead to just 6.
Robinson's layup with 13:53 remaining, cut the SMC lead to just four. AJ Sims gave WEST it's first lead of the second
half when he knocked down a 3 pointer. Robinson followed the 3 with a dunk and it was WEST by 1 with 10:02
left in the game. Baskets by Woods, McCray and Sims gave the Wildcats even more breathing room, as SMC
struggled against the Wildcat defense.
Daniel Estes' monster dunk at the 4 minute mark sealed win for WEST, putting the Wildcats up by eight.
Free throws by McCray and Sims put the game out of reach, 80-75.

Christian McCray led WEST with a game high 29 points, 21 of those coming in the second half.
McCray put on a shooting clinic making 7 of his 11 shots and was 6-7 from the line in the second stanza, to go
along with 11 rebounds. Both McCray and Robinson shot 50% from the floor. Robinson finished with 15 points.
Danial Estes added 13 for the Wildcats.
