It took them most of the first half to get their offense going, but once the Cerritos College women's soccer team scored their first goal, they went on to score six times. The Falcons (7-3-2), unbeaten in their last six games (5-0-1), recorded a 6-0 win at Los Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday. The team will now begin South Coast Conference play on Friday at 4:00 p.m. when they travel to Pasadena City College.
Cerritos posted one goal in the first half and then opened the second half with three goals in five minutes to bust the game wide open. The first half goal that seemed to get things started came in the 39th minute when sophomore Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) chipped the ball over the Seahawks (5-5-1) defense, where freshman Samantha Martinez (San Pedro HS) was able to get to the loose ball and chipped a shot over the keeper.
The second half started with the Falcons dominating possession and executed well enough to put three more goals on the board. In the 50th minute, freshman Alyssa Amaro (Katella HS) led Martinez toward the goal with a pass and she was able to beat the keeper to the ball and placed it into an open spot in the net.
Just two minutes later, freshman Alessandra Ramirez (Warren HS) possessed a bad clearing pass and turned it into a nice offensive pass that landed on the foot of sophomore Nia Thompson (Kennedy HS/Alabama A&M University) inside the six-yard box, where she laced the ball into the upper corner for a goal. Keeping the momentum going, Ramirez used her big leg to score her fourth goal of the season on a free kick from 30 yards out just three minutes later.
Maintaining their offensive dominance in the game, the Falcons scored another goal from long distance in the 66th minute. Sophomore Maria Campos (Paramount HS) fed freshman Lucia Yanez (El Rancho HS) with a nice pass, and she shot from 40 yards out, with the ball finding its way into the net. With time running out in the game, sophomore Jaylene Valentin (La Serna HS) crossed a pass to freshman Olga Luna (Long Beach Millikan HS) in the 87th minute and she was able to volley the ball into the right corner of the net to close out the scoring.
Freshman goalies Liza Cisneros (Bellflower HS) and Melanie Corona (El Rancho HS) shared the shutout and only saw one shot on net.
