Pirates score quick, hold of MiraCosta, 1-0

COSTA MESA -- Those who showed up at 4:01 p.m. for Tuesday's 4 p.m. match missed all of the offense as the Orange Coast College men's soccer team notched a 1-0 win over visiting MiraCosta College on Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Coast (3-1-1)  took its first possession and found the back of the net when a long pass from the midfield found the foot of a streaking Danny Vargas down the left side. The sophomore standout then slipped a pass up the middle towards the Spartans' goal, where Tino Varona was at the right place and banked in a deflection just under MiraCosta goalkeeper Adrian Valencia just 29 seconds into the contest.

From there, both teams traded decent scoring opportunities but were unsuccessful in scoring. For the Pirates, it was their fourth game in which they held the opposition to one goal or less and it's the third shutout for this young season so far.

The Spartans' best shot to even the match came late in the second half when a cross from Jose Aguirre found the head of teammate George Silva, but his header attempt just missed outside the goal frame.

OCC's defense -- led by Jared Velazquez, Tony Tobon, Will Hooper and Padric Pigeon -- held the Spartans to just three shots on goal and OCC goalkeeper Luke Fyvie was up to the task at stopping all of them.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Southwestern College, beginning at 3 p.m.
