FOOTBALL: JUST SHORT OF A TITLE

The Hornet football team fell short of the SCFA Central Conference Championship on Saturday night after Mount San Antonio College ended their season 20-13.

The stands at Covina District Field were filled as the Hornets and Mounties clashed for the 62nd time. And as always, when they meet it is a big deal as both programs have storied histories. Prior to the game, both teams entered with 3-1 records with winner-take-all stakes. Although FC lost a tough one tonight, they still own a 37-21 lead over Mt. SAC in the all-time series that began back in 1946. The Hornets won that first meeting 28-13.

The Hornets put up the game's first points on a 36-yard field goal by Alec Fonseca (5:42 in the first quarter).

The Mounties matched Fullerton at the start of the second quarter with a field goal of their own, a 26-yarder by Gabriel Dunkle (6:52, 2 quarter).

Fullerton went up 10-3 on a nice 25-yard scramble by QB Cooper Callis at 12:35 in the second quarter.

A Hornet fumble placed Mt. San Antonio in excellent field position, and 5 plays later the Mounties got into the end zone on a 2-yard run by Malaki Thompson (6:52 2 quarter).

The Mounties took a 17-10 lead in the second half (9:18 3 quarter) when quarterback Zach Rangel tossed a 14 yard pass to Jonathan Schofield.

Dunkle added to the Mt. SAC lead hitting a 36-yard field goal with 2:16 left in the third quarter.

FC tried to play catch-up when Fonseca knocked a 30-yard field goal through the up-rights.

Down 20-13, Fullerton had a chance to get back in it with 5 minutes left in the game, but it was not to be as the Mounties forced FC to punt 5 plays later. With 4 minutes left to play, Mt. SAC ran the clock down with 2 first down plays to take the Central Conference Championship.
