Women's basketball team tops Cerritos, 91-42, eyes state tourney

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team took down Cerritos, 91-42, Thursday at home in the California Community College Athletic Association So. Cal. regional playoffs.

The Lasers, seeded second in So. Cal., had no problem with the 18th-seeded Falcons in the second round.

IVC got off to a slow start, but ended the first quarter strong and held a 25-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Irvine Valley's lead just got bigger from there. The Lasers led, 49-21, at the half, and were able to rest most of their starters in the second half.

The Lasers' biggest advantage was 52 points (91-39) after a three-pointer by freshnman guard Andrea Garcia with 41 seconds left in the game.

Sophomore guard Paola Roa led Irvine Valley with 25 points and 10 rebounds. 

She was one of four Laser players to score in double figures on the night.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian added 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks, sophomore guard Jessica Suruor finished with 13 points, five assists and two steals and sophomore point guard and Orange Empire Conference MVP Morgan Higgins contributed 12 points, five assists and four steals.

The Lasers shot 42.2 percent (35 of 83) from the field as a team and held Cerritos to just 29.6 percent shooting as a squad.

IVC out-rebounded the Falcons, 55-37, and turned Cerritos over 25 times.

Irvine Valley moves on to the regional finals with a state berth on the line. 

IVC hosts College of the Canyons on Saturday at 7 p.m.
