Bryan Gomez, Eduardo Rodriguez and Juan Montelongo each had a goal and assist on Tuesday, leading Hancock to a surprising 5-2 men's soccer upset of No. 13 SBCC in a WSC North opener at La Playa Stadium.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-8-1 while the Vaqueros had their five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-2-1.

"We lost our winning spirit and our will to work hard," said Hans Nordin, a freshman forward from Sweden who scored SBCC's first goal on a rebound at 11:48 after Hancock goalie Maisen Baro stopped a PK by Jonas Romero. "I don't what happened to us today, it sucked the air out of us."

The Bulldogs tied it 1-1 at 18:20 when Gomez caromed a shot off the left post on an assist by Montelongo. In the 40th minute, Christian Angulo slipped the ball to Montelongo, who drove a 12-yard shot into the upper left for a 2-1 lead.

Angulo made it 3-1 less than five minutes later after a back-heel pass from Gomez.

The Vaqueros cut the deficit to 3-2 when Lalo Corrales ripped a 30-yard shot past the keeper into the lower right corner 10 seconds before halftime.

Baro made eight saves for the Bulldogs and denied Christopher Robinson on a hard shot at 63:25. SBCC outshot their county rival 18-10, including 10-6 in shots on goal.

The Bulldogs got an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Rodriguez fed Salvador Andrade in front of the net and added a fifth goal on a 24-yard free kick by Rodriguez at 82:40.

"We started off brightly and could have been three goals up but it wasn't to be today," said 13th-year coach John Sisterson. "Sometimes, you have off days and we had too many with off days today.

"Nobody likes losing and the guys are very disappointed. We had some good strikes today and their goalkeeper pulled off a couple of good saves. In the second half, I thought if we could get a goal early, the game might have been different but it wasn't to be.

"I don't know if we've ever conceded five goals in a game."

It was the first time the Vaqueros had allowed five goals in 64 games, a span of nearly three years, dating back to a 5-3 loss to Chaffey on Sept. 20, 2016.

The Vaqueros will travel to Oxnard to take on the No. 5 Condors on Friday at 2 p.m.
