Warriors Dominate Citrus In Season Opener

TORRANCE, Calif. - The El Camino College men's soccer team opened the season in style with a dominant 5-0 victory over Citrus at home on the ECC Soccer Field.

The Warriors (1-0) had five different goal scorers for the day.  The Warriors outshot the Owls (0-1) 20 to 5, with nine of those shots on goal.

Larry Lopez opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with an early contender for goal of the season.  Ricky Andrade sent a ball into Lopez who was just inside the 18-yard box and Lopez bicycle kicked the ball into the top left corner to give the Warriors lead.

The Warriors then exploded for four goals in the second half in the last twenty five minutes of play.  Oliver Diaz scored off a header in the 65th minute on a free kick from Eduardo Grados. Jorge Alvarenga scored in the 70th minute off a mistake from the Citrus keeper.  Larry Lopez sent a ball into the 6-yard box that the goalkeeper dropped right into the feet of Alvarenga who blasted it into the box to make it 3-0. The Warriors struck for two more goals in the final five minutes of play.  Melvyn Perez-Cortez played a great give-and-go with Larry Lopez around the 18-yard box and Perez-Cortez finished the sequence off nicely by rounding the keeper to make it 4-0. The Warriors made it 5-0 in the 88th minute after drawing a penalty kick.  Grados easily slotted it to the left of the keeper to kill off the game for the Warriors.

Luis Garibay got the start in goal for the Warriors and made one save.

The Warriors head to Santa Monica College on Friday for their next game at 3:00 PM.
