Grossmont's own Fumiko Seki won 1st place for singles at the annual Grossmont College Badminton Tournament Friday, February 21, 2020.

Seki won the title against Sami from SD City College. Sami was the 2019 state champion in singles. Seki also placed 2nd with partner Lea Hazel in the doubles competition.

Grossmont hosted 32 singles players and 16 double teams from SD City College, SD Mesa College, Irvine Valley College, and De Anza College (San Jose) at the tournament this year. Grossmont's coaches, Ayumi Hazel and Yukari Naono are so proud of the participants, especially those of Grossmont College.

"The students dedicate their time to practice and try their best to improve. The beginner players had their fist experience to compete in the tournament, learned a lot of things, and had a great time. Hao, the female student, came to help us too!" states Hazel.

She continues, "Assistant coach Naono did very nice job running the front desk and organizing matches. She made the tournament run smoothly so that it ended around 4:30 p.m. (new record time)! I am very fortunate to have her for the team. She was also the state champion in 2017 and 2018!"

Thank you to SD City College, SD Mesa College, Irvine Valley College, and De Anza College for making this year's tournament great.
