Vikings Take Down Grossmont 6-3

The Long Beach City College baseball team defeated the Grossmont College Griffins 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Vikings Baseball Field. With the win, the Vikings advance to 9-3 overall.

Freshman pitcher Mitchell Knight (3-0) earned his third win on the hill with only allowing the Griffins to one run on four hits, while striking down three in five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Dennis Stevenson took home the save with shutting out the Griffins completely with no hits and no runs in the final two innings.

Sophomore first baseman Lucas Gonzalez got the offense moving in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to score in freshman catcher Hunter Baclig, then freshman second baseman Michael Pinal smashed a double to center field to score in freshman left fielder Bryan Sanders to take the lead 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore right fielder Tyler Vargas hit a double to left field to bring in sophomore designated hitter Ryan Guerrero to extend the Vikings' lead 3-0.

The Griffins scored in the top of the fifth, but then the Vikings capitalized off two Griffin errors in the bottom of the six to stay ahead 6-1.

Grossmont scored two more in the top of the seventh, but then sophomore designated hitter Jake Creamer ran the final run off a wild pitch to seal the Vikings' win 6-3.

The Vikings will be back on the field for conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Compton College at 6 p.m.
