College of the Canyons rushed for 403 yards and 6 TDs on Sunday night en route to a 63-10 football win over SBCC in Santa Clarita.
The game was scheduled to be played on Saturday night at SBCC but had to be moved due to a power outage on campus. It was probably the first time the Vaqueros had ever played football on a Sunday.
The Vaqueros (1-2) played well in the first half and only trailed by 11 at halftime, 21-10. SBCC got a 27-yard field goal from Lucas Eilbacher and a 3-yard TD run by quarterback Scotty Forbes with 11:05 to go in the second quarter.
The 12th-ranked Cougars (2-1) dominated the second half, scoring 21 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth. They averaged 11.9 yards per rush for the game and 11.5 overall.
SBCC kept pace in first downs with Canyons piling up 33 and the Vaqueros 31. The Cougars won the total yardage battle by 410 yards – 676 to 266.
The Cougars hurt themselves with a whopping 19 penalties for 189 yards. They had two long punt returns for TDs called back by penalties. The Vaqueros had two penalties for 18 yards.
COC quarterback Armani Edden did most of his damage in the first half and finished with 18 completions in 24 attempts for 248 yards and two TDs. Jordan Francis had five tackles and an interception for the Vaqueros.
Canyons took a 14-0 lead by scoring two TDs in 68 seconds in the first quarter. They drove 76 yards for a 3-yard TD run by Cayden Dunn, then scored on a 25-yard pass from Edden to Trey Longstretch following a 38-yard punt return by Emari Smith.
Cyrus Zuell ran eight times for 109 yards and a TD – all in the second half.
Bradley Kleven completed 11-of-19 passes for 122 yards for the Vaqueros. Jahmal Cornwell caught six passes for 79 yards and a 13.2 average.
SBCC freshman Jaylon Smith had a 65-yard kick return in the first quarter and ended up with 221 all-purpose yards (174 yards on 6 returns for a 29.0 average 47 receiving yards on 4 catches).
The Vaqueros will play their third straight road game against a top-25 opponent on Saturday when they travel to Glendora to take on No. 23 Citrus at 1 p.m.
