Women's Tennis Stays Unbeaten, Pushes Streak to Seven

SYLMAR — College of the Canyons managed to stay unbeaten with a narrow 5-4 road victory at L.A. Mission College on Monday, as the Cougars went 2-for-3 in doubles play and claimed three singles points, aided by an injury default in the No. 3 position. 

Monday's match marked the start of the second round of Western State Conference (WSC) play and pitted first place Canyons (8-2, 7-0) vs. the conference's second place team in LAMC (9-3, 5-2).

Lauren Hannah and Jennifer Russell earned an 8-3 doubles win. Lauren Neal and Hannah Heiber also teamed for an 8-2 victory to represent the first two COC points of the day.

In singles action it was No. 2 player Lexi Paunovic and No. 6 Lauren Hannah playing to valuable points for the Cougars. Meanwhile, in the No. 3 singles match Jennifer Russell emerged victorious due to an injury default.

With five regular season matches remaining COC next takes the court at Santa Monica College for a 1 p.m. match on Thursday, March 3.

2. Hannah/Russell (COC) defeats Prado/Galvan (LAMC) — 8-3

1. Ashley Villarta (COC) loses to Anna Kynclova (LAMC) — 1-6, 0-6

2. Lexi Paunovic (COC) defeats Angels Zamorano (LAMC) — 6-1, 6-0

3. Jennifer Russell (COC) defeats Isabella Cornejo (LAMC) — Injury default

4. Lauren Neal COC) loses to Verenice Prado (LAMC) — 3-6, 2-6

5. Hannah Heiber (COC) loses to Julisa Galvan (LAMC) — 6-7, 0-6

6. Lauren Hannah (COC) defeats Victoria Garcia (LAMC) — 6-4, 6-3
