Defense and Strong Inside Play Helps Spartans to Upset Rival Palomar

Emmy Wiemann

On Friday night the MiraCosta women's basketball team traveled to Palomar College for a battle for first place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.  After forty minutes of hard fought basketball the Spartans walked off the court victorious, something that hasn't happened since 2011.  With the win MiraCosta secures first place in the conference and continues to build their post season resume. The final score of the game was 55-51, improving the Spartans to a 12-5 overall record and 4-0 in conference play.

MiraCosta was led by freshman forward Emmy Wiemann who finished with a dominant double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.  Freshman Madison Rowe led all scorers with 14 points going 7-11 from the field. Sophomore McKena Stoeff added ten points, missing only one shot. Sophomore guard Julia Iman also had a big game with eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists.  On the backs of Wiemann, Rowe and Stoeff the Spartans were nearly unstoppable close to the rim.

Despite making 22 turnovers MiraCosta maintained the lead by holding the Comets to 25% shooting from the floor and 15% from the three point line.  The defensive scheme put together by coach Laurie Byrd slowed down the 3rd most potent offense in the state, holding a team that was averaging 79 points per game to only 51.

The Spartans are next in action as they continue conference play on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at San Diego City for a 5PM tip off.
