Late Penalty Kick Leads to 2-1 Loss for Santa Ana Men’s Soccer

SANTA ANA, Calif. – It was a heated battle between the No. 12 Santa Ana men's soccer team and the No. 19 Fullerton Hornets on Tuesday afternoon. Things were chippy the whole way through as the teams combined for 37 fouls and 10 yellow cards, including three on coaches.

The match started with Fullerton capitalizing on a corner kick that forward Kentrell Dorsey put into the goal to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute.

Santa Ana hung around, waiting for their opportunity which came in the 65th minute when they earned a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Marcelo Aguirre stepped up and knocked in the shot for his third goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

The match would go on for another 25 minutes before Fullerton pulled head by a score of 2-1 on a penalty kick that was awarded in extra time. SAC did have enough time to respond, as the last whistle was blown just seconds after the goal was scored.

Santa Ana falls to (6-4-0, 0-2-0) while the Hornets takes the win to improve to (6-4-2, 2-1-0).

NEXT UP: The Dons will get another crack at a top 20 ranked team as they go on the road to face No. 8 Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference match on Friday at 3:00p.m. The Chargers have yet to lose with an 8-0-2, 1-0-1 record after defeating Santiago Canyon 3-0 on Tuesday.
