Women's Basketball: Bear Cubs come out strong at home

             For their third home game in a row, the Bear Cubs (9-11, 5-6) hosted the Hawks (7-16, 3-9) of Cosumnes River College. The Bear Cubs won the tipoff and had a cross-court pass intercepted. After a Hawk miss, the Bear Cubs made four shots in a row--Jasmine Henderson's spin move, Maiya Flores' step-back 10-footer, Cammie Barsuglia's left handed driving layup, and Flores' 3-pointer--and two free throws each by Flores and Shayla Newman to jump out to a 13-4 lead after four minutes of play. During the next three minutes the Hawks made three field goals and a 3-pointer, while Flores sank two more from beyond the arc and Henderson caught a laser pass that Flores one-handed off the dribble from half court between two defenders and laid the ball in to put the lead at 21-13. Madeline Strom made one free throw and Britta Irvine a layup before the Hawks hit a 3-pointer and a field goal. With the clock under 10 seconds, Irvine drove across the top of the key around a defender and towards the basket to bank in the layup with six seconds left to end the scoring with the Bear Cubs ahead 26-18.

            Shayla Newman made the first field goal of the second quarter on a putback. About a minute later the Hawks scored on a drive. Jasmine Henderson put in a fast break layup, and the Hawks sank an 8-footer with 7:02 on the clock. DJ Hayes scored four points in a row on a putback and a drive before the Hawks made one free throw with 3:59 left. The Bear Cubs finished the quarter with seven more points on Lizeth Zavala's drive, Britta Irvine's 10-footer, and Maiya Flores' 3-pointer just before the buzzer for a 41-23 halftime lead.

            Neither team could make a shot in the first three minutes of the third quarter. The Hawks finally put in a field goal with 6:57 on the clock. Shayla Newman sank the Bear Cubs' first field goal 46 seconds later. Madeline Strom made a nice post move in front of the basket at the 5:29 mark for a 45-26 lead. The Hawks scored a field goal on their next possession. Maiya Flores put back her own missed shot, and then the Hawks hit a 15-footer. DJ Hayes cut to the hoop, caught the pinpoint pass from Britta Irvine, and laid the ball in with a defender next to her. The Hawks scored another field goal, and Hayes scored on a drive with 2:23 left for a 51-32 advantage. The Hawks put in a 3-pointer and a field goal with 1:46 remaining. Flores' scoring drive with 42 seconds to go completed the scoring, giving the Bear Cubs a 53-37 lead by the end of the quarter.

            Shayla Newman made two free throws 15 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Hawks made one a minute later. Newman scored on an up-and-under post move, and Britta Irvine dropped in a one-handed 10-foot floater with 6:34 on the clock. Following a Hawks' field goal, Madeline Strom picked up a ball that was nearly intercepted six feet from the hoop and took a couple of dribbles before banking in the layup with 5:31 left. The Hawks made one free throw almost a minute later, and Madeline Strom dropped in a putback with 2:54 remaining. The Hawks scored the next seven points on a pair of field goals and a 3-pointer before DJ Hayes drove in for the Bear Cubs' final basket with 1:02 to go. Madeline Strom drew a shooting foul near the basket and made both free throws. The Hawks sank one last field goal with 14.8 seconds to play. The Bear Cubs dribbled out the clock on their 67-50 victory.

            The Bear Cubs got off to a good start in the first half, as they made 16 out of 33 shots (48%). Meanwhile the Hawks made only 10 out of 34 (29%). In the second half the two teams had nearly identical success rates with the Bear Cubs making 11 out of 33 (33%) and the Hawks 11 out of 32 (34%).

            Maiya Flores, who made four 3-pointers, led the Bear Cubs in scoring with 20 points. Shayla Newman registered her eighth double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. DJ Hayes nearly had her first double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Madeline Strom added 9 points, Britta Irvine 8, Jasmine Henderson 6, and Lizeth Zavala and Cammie Barsuglia 2 each. Strom and Barsuglia each pulled down 6 rebounds. Irvine passed for 3 assists.
