Hawks Play Well Despite Losses

Hawks Play Well Despite Losses

This past week, The Cosumnes River Hawks went 1-2 in their three games, giving them a conference record of 5-3 and an overall record of 14-8.  Although some of the games did not end in their favor, The Hawks played hard all weekend long.  CRC's first loss came against the Sierra Wolverines who remain undefeated in conference.  Despite the loss, the Hawks remained in the lead for the majority of the game, but a late game comeback for the Wolverines led to a 7-5 loss for CRC.  Following the loss, The Hawks bounced back in their first game of their Saturday double-header against the Diablo Valley Vikings, beating them 8-3.  In the second game of the day, The Hawks lost 3-2 to the Vikings, losing on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning.

When asked, Head Coach Kristy Schroeder said that she did not want these losses to take any credit away from how her team played.  She stated, "It's tough letting teams get back into it late in the game, but we have to be able to finish.  We need to work on putting teams away and continuing to score runs in the later innings to keep games from ending like theses ones did."  Coach Schroeder remains confident in her team, and she trusts her pitching plan and her team's ability to hit the ball heading into the back half of the season.

Sierra College (March 3rd)

The Hawks played a tough game at home against the Sierra College Wolverines, who still remain undefeated in conference play.  The Hawks jumped off to a great start, possessing a 4-1 lead heading into the 5th inning, but the Wolverines managed to put six runs on the board in the final three innings of the game.  CRC rallied behind an incredible performance by freshman infielder, Leandra Coronado (Elk Grove, CA. / Monterey Trail HS), who had three hits in her four at bats.  Two of Coronado's three hits were doubles, and she also accumulated two RBIs as well as scoring a run.  Sophomore, Alexandria Hale (Elk Grove, CA. / Elk Grove HS) also played well tallying two hits in the game and scoring a run.

Diablo Valley (March 7th)

On Saturday, The Hawks traveled to Diablo Valley College to take on the Vikings in a double header.  The Hawks easily won the first game, 8-3 due to their ability to hit the ball and their strong defensive play.  The second game against the Vikings was a tight game from the start, and strong pitching on both sides kept it close until the final inning.  The Hawks took an early 2-1 lead in the game but ended up losing on a Viking walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Coronado continued her strong play for the Hawks into the two matchups against the Vikings, totaling four hits in seven at bats.  She also contributed two runs and two RBIs for her team.  Danielle Pfenning (Lodi, CA. / Lodi HS), Crystel Ruaro (Crockett, CA. / John Swett HS), and Aliah Cisneros (Lodi, CA. / Tokay HS) also contributed to the Hawks hitting power by adding two RBIs each in the first game.  Becky Pedersen (Ukiah, CA. / Ukiah HS) moved to a 7-4 record on the mound with another strong pitching performance in the first game.  In three innings pitched in the first game, she only allowed three hits and also struck out three Vikings' batters.

The Hawks are at home for all of their upcoming games this week, and are hoping to go 3-0.  On Tuesday, March 10th at 3:00pm, they take on American River College in a conference matchup.  On Saturday, March 14th, they play two out of conference games against Solano at 10:00am and Cabrillo at 2:00pm.
