(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Basketball team improved to a perfect 3-0 in the South Coast Conference North with a 54-39 win over visiting Rio Hondo on Wednesday, January 25 on the opening night at the new gymnasium.

Both the men's and women's basketball teams played their first games in the new facility before a big crowd.

Mt. SAC sophomore guard Kamesha Moore said of the new facility.... "It's very nice," she said. "For the people before us, they worked for this, and we get to play in this beautiful building."

With the win, Mt. SAC improves to 16-7 overall.

Leading the way for the Mounties was freshman center Indigo Parker (8-11 FGM-A, 11 RB, 1 Stl.) with a game-high 16 points.

Parker, who scored 10 points in the second quarter, had a season-high six blocks in the game.

Two other players scored in double figures for the Mounties, who remain atop the conference.

Jamya Mickens (2-3 FGM-A, 12 RB, 6 A, 2 Stls.) and Moore (2-3 3PM-A, 10 RB, 6 A) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Mounties. Moore also had six steals, which is the fifth time this season she had six or more in a game.

After a low-scoring first quarter, with the Mounties holding a 9-8 lead, they opened up the lead by outscoring the Roadrunners, 19-10, in the second quarter to take a 10-point, 28-18 lead at the half.

They continued with another good defensive quarter by holding Rio Hondo to nine points, while scoring 16 to basically put the game away early, 44-27 leading into the fourth quarter.

"Once we got going, we really just had to keep our foot on the pedal and keep it going and we stopped them with our defense," Moore said. "Once we get it with our defense, everything else just falls into place.

"I feed off of my teammates for their support, the coaches and everybody in the stands."

We're planning on going undefeated (in conference) the whole way and we have to take it game-by-game."

Next up for the Southern California No. 4-ranked Mounties is a conference game against L.A. Trade Tech this Friday, Jan. 27 at home.
