Comets open PCAC play with 4-0 win

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/26/2020) – Palomar College began defense of its Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball championship with a 4-0 victory over Grossmont in the conference opener for both teams.

The left side of the Palomar infield, freshman shortstop Samarah Martinez and sophomore third baseman Shea Lane, accounted for five of Palomar's nine hits to support a combined four-hit shutout by Comets pitchers Cat Aguilar and Alyssa Domingo.

Martinez was 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles, including an RBI single in the fifth inning which scored freshman pinch-runner Serenity Burroughs. Martinez also scored ahead of a fourth-inning double by Lane, who was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Aguilar, a sophomore, pitched five innings for her seventh win against no losses. She allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five batters. Domingo, a freshman, worked two innings in relief, allowing two hits and three walks with one strikeout.

The Comets, now 11-2 overall, were coming off a pair of non-conference victories over Fresno City (9-1) and Riverside City (11-3) on Feb. 22 at Rosetta Canyon Sports Park in Lake Elsinore. Grossmont fell to 7-4 overall with the loss.

Palomar will host Southwestern in another PCAC clash on Friday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. before going on the road to Mt. San Antonio College for a pair of nonconference games on Saturday, Feb. 29 against defending state champion Mt. SAC at noon and Santiago Canyon at 2 p.m.
