Mt. SAC Men’s Basketball Defeat L.A. Southwest College, 80-75 in final nonconference game; Gonzalez scores 24

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Basketball Team completed its nonconference schedule with a win over visiting L.A. Southwest, 80-75 Friday (1/11), as freshman guard Joseph Gonzalez poured in a season-high 24 points to lead the Mounties.

All of Gonzalez' (7 for 12 FGM, 4 RB) scoring from the field came by way of the 3-pointer, as he poured in seven and was perfect at the free throw line (3 for 3).

The Mounties (7-8) built up a 19-point lead with 14:35 left in the second half, but saw it dwindle all the way down to a mere two points, 72-70 with just 2:36 remaining in the game.

Gonzalez, with an assist from sophomore guard Daniel Dejoya (6-12 FGM, 5 RB, 8 Assts., 1 Stl.), drained his last long-range basket of the game to give Mt. SAC a 75-70 lead with 2:15 left.

Each team scored five points the rest of the way as the Mounties came away with the five-point victory.

"This game was huge," Gonzalez said. "We've been struggling coming into our (conference) schedule. Our goal this week was to go 2-0 and we did that."

The Mounties defeated El Camino Wednesday (1/9), 63-61.

"I told my guards that I love them and appreciate them a lot," added Gonzalez. "They know how to give everyone the ball when they're hot."

Also scoring in double figures for the Mounties was freshman forward Shallamar Poole (7-9 FGM, 8 RB, 1 Stl., 1 Blk.) with 15 points, while Dejoya and Cyree Dunnell (5-11 FGM, 1-3 3PM, 3-4 FTM, 3 Asst., 3 Stls.) each had 14 points.

As a team the Mounties connected on 11 of 22 (50%) 3-pointers and out-rebounded the Cougars, 36-25, 21 of which were on the defensive boards.

"At the end of the day we got the 'W'," sophomore forward Israel Mansker said. "They came back and had that run (27-10 run), but we had to lock in at the end in the last two minutes to get the win."

The Mounties will host L.A. Harbor in a South Coast Conference crossover game next Wednesday (1/16). Game time is 7:00 pm.
