Mounties split opening matches; Defeat RCC, 5-0, and lose to Ventura, 5-0

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball team opened the 2022 season with a pair of matches against Riverside City College and Ventura with a win and a loss at the Walnut "Beach".

Mt. SAC won all five sets against RCC, (5-0), but fell by the same score to Ventura (5-0).

"(Friday, Feb. 4) was our first game of the season, as well as our home opener," Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball coach Danielle Diaz said. "We had a great turnout and are so appreciative to the Mounties family who showed up to support us."

In the first match against RCC, the No. 1's, Riley DeGroot and Allison Whiteman swept the Tigers in two sets. The other three pairs followed suit with sweeps to start the season off right.

"I'm really proud of them for starting off strong and getting that first win against Riverside," Diaz said. "This was DeGroot's first game back since the ankle injury she got during the indoor season. She has done a great job with her recovery and we are excited to have her back and healthy."

In the second match, Ventura turned the tables on the Mounties and swept them in five sets. The only pair to take the set to three games was DeGroot and Whiteman.

"Whiteman and DeGroot battled at the 1's pair against Ventura and took them to a tight 3rd set," Diaz added.

"We knew Ventura was going to be a tough team to beat and unfortunately, we couldn't pull it out, but they still gave them a great fight."

"After a challenging year, we are so grateful for the opportunity to be back on the sand and compete this season with little to no limitations!"

No. 6's, Jordyn Sanchez and Mia Ortiz played an exhibition match.

The Mounties travel to Mt. San Jacinto College Wednesday (Feb. 9). Their next home match is Friday (Feb. 11) at 10:00 am against Fullerton.

  3. JJ Quarrels and Diana Pelcastre
