The West Valley basketball team lost sole possession of first place in the Coast-South with a lackluster 61-55 loss at Monterey Peninsula Wednesday night.

Looking like they would avenge a January home loss to the Lobos, the Vikings (15-9, 6-3 Coast-South) raced out to a 10-2 lead 14 minutes in. MPC (10-15, 6-3) outscored WVC 27-10 to grab a 29-20 lead at intermission and were never seriously threatened.

The Vikings were able to cut the lead to 50-46 with just over four minutes to go, but that was as close as they would get. The difference in the outcome was at the charity stripe which WVC visited only ten times, converting six, while MPC was 14-21 on the evening.

Sufyan Elkannan led West Valley with 15 points, while Adam Afifi had 12 and Ben Baker finished with 10.

Now tied with MPC and Cabrillo for the conference lead, West Valley hosts San Jose City (10-16, 5-5) Friday in an all-important Valentines Day affair. Tipoff is 5:30pm.
