Vikings ground Seahawks 4-1 in "Battle at the Beach"

The West Valley beach volleyball team improved to 4-1 in the Coast Conference with a 4-1 win over rival Cabrillo Friday in Santa Cruz. The Vikings took a 2-0 match lead into the final round after 5's Elizabeth McGrath and Lizhya Shoomoonof swept Summer Elston and Katy Haworth 21-8, 21-12, and Claire Danna and Gabriela Valencia stayed unbeaten against community college opponents with a 16-21, 21-11, 15-13 victory over Lily French and Sierra Martin. Cabrillo 2's Ellie Cary and Jordyn Skucius swept Katrina Hochmuth and Rene Wash 21-15, 21-7 to open the late round and bring the Seahawks to within 2-1. A pair of three-set thrillers in the 1's and 3's pairs decided the match. West Valley 1's Kaylin Henderson and Mapuhola Sekona also stayed unbeaten with a tight 21-18, 20-22, 15-10 win over Lina Fiso and Jolie Samuelson. Kayla Keller and Hannah Reynoso closed it out with a 21-15, 16-21, 15-10 victory with Briana Ayala and Ari Rodriguez. The Vikings (6-6, 4-1 Coast) host Foothill (2-7, 0-3) and Gavilan (7-4, 4-1) Friday (4/5). First serve is 1:00pm.
