SBVC Comes From Behind to Squeeze by Citrus

Sofia Gonzalez struck out nine, and the San Bernardino Valley College softball team picked up its first win of the year, beating Citrus College 3-2 in the Wolverines' home opener at the Drayson Center on the campus of Loma Linda University.

Citrus sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning, picking up both their runs in the frame. First, leadoff batter Leah Morales came home on a passed ball three batters in. Then Jasani Zavalza scored from third with two outs on a single by Desiree Loza. But after that, the Owls' bats were shut down by Gonzalez, who only allowed two base runners the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines were held hitless through the third, when they finally broke through against starter Marissa Gallegos. With one out, Monique Davila lined a single to left, and Jaslyn Sanchez singled through the left side. Nataly Gonzalez drew a walk to load the bases, bringing up Tara  Walker. Walker hit a ball hard up the middle to score Davila, and when Morales bobbled the ball, Sanchez was able to score to tie the game.

The Wolverines broke the tie in the sixth. Joclynn Redell worked a walk from a 3-2 count, and Gizelle Mascorro took her place at first. After Audi Pettaway hit a shot right at Morales, Mascorro was able to advance to second on a passed ball. She went to third on a groundout deep in the hole at short. With two out, Cristina Lopez blasted a ball deep to right that Patty Rodriguez just missed for a triple, scoring Mascorro with the game-winner.

SBVC only picked up four hits in the game, as Citrus committed four errors. Gonzalez went the distance, allowing five hits, walking one and allowing one earned run for her first win of the season.
