#23 Jaz Henderson driving against Sierra College

SRJC 55, Sierra College 77

The Bear Cubs (6-7, 2-2), in their first Big 8 home game of 2019, hosted the Wolverines (10-6, 1-3) of Sierra College. The visitors drained back-to-back 3-pointers and a field goal to start the game. Shayla Newman's drive got the Bear Cubs on the scoreboard with 7:55 on the clock, and scored on a left-handed one the next time down to close the gap to 4-8. The Wolverines sank their fourth shot in a row 15 seconds later. Newman converted a putback nearly two minutes after her previous basket. The Wolverines hit another 3-pointer, and Cammie Barsuglia quickly answered with her own 3-ball. Following a Wolverines' field goal, Jasmine Henderson drew a shooting foul and made the second free throw to get to 10-18 with 3:08 left. The Wolverines added three free throws and a field goal before Maiya Flores caught the inbounds pass against the full-court press and dribbled the length of the court past defenders to score the left-handed layup with 1:14 remaining. The Wolverines ended the period with a 10-0 run, including two 3-pointers, by capitalizing on the Bear Cubs' turnovers for a 30-12 lead.

The Wolverines sank two free throws on their first possession of the second quarter. Shayla Newman made one of two free throws on the Bear Cubs' first chance with the ball. Twice more Newman went to the free throw line and made just the second one, for a score of 15-34 three minutes into the quarter. The Wolverines scored 10 unanswered points before Lizeth Zavala banked in a fast break layup with 2:45 on the clock. As the period came to a close, Maiya Flores and Madeline Strom both made their two free throws, and the Wolverines added one free throw and one field goal to go into halftime with a 47-21 lead.

DJ Hayes tallied the first point of the third quarter when she sank one of two free throws. The Wolverines scored the next four points, and then Shayla Newman made the Bear Cubs' first field goal of the period at the 7:17 mark. Maiya Flores' pull-up jumper with 5:31 on the clock made the score 26-53. Newman made both of her free throws the next time down and Cammie Barsuglia a single free throw with 4:22 left to put the deficit at 29-55. Newman sank an inside shot and Barsuglia a driving layup as their last basket of the quarter with 2:35 remaining. The Wolverines finished with an 8-0 run, including a field goal at the buzzer, to widen their lead to 68-33.

The Bear Cubs started the fourth quarter by making five out of six shots--field goals by Maiya Flores, Britta Irvine, Madeline Strom, and Shayla Newman and Irvine's 3-pointer--and two free throws each by Newman and Hayes to get to 48-75 with 4:38 on the clock. During the remainder of the game, Hayes made three out of four free throws, Newman two out of two from the line, and Madeline Strom a short shot to make the final score 55-77.

The Wolverines got off to a hot start in the opening quarter, making 11 out of 16 shots (69%), including five 3-pointers. The Bear Cubs made just five out of 12 shots (42%) in the first quarter and one out of seven (14%) in the second, as turnovers limited their chances for attempting shots. For the game the Wolverines made 29 out of 61 shots (48%) to the Bear Cubs' 16 out of 46 (35%).

Shayla Newman, with her sixth double-double of the season, led the Bear Cubs with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Maiya Flores finished with 8 points, DJ Hayes, Cammie Barsuglia, and Madeline Strom 6 each, Britta Irvine 5, Lizeth Zavala 2, and Jasmine Henderson 1.
