New faces pace Vaqueros in 3-1 win at Golden West

Calvin Sanborn and Blake Lockhart recorded double-doubles on Wednesday night and a foursome of new freshmen helped guide SBCC to a 3-1 men's volleyball win over Golden West in Huntington Beach. The scores were 25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 25-16.

Sanborn, a freshman left-hander from Santa Cruz, had 13 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Lockhart, a 6-7 sophomore from Santa Ynez, pounded 11 kills and dug 11 balls.

The Vaqueros won their third straight road match to improve to 3-1.

Four freshmen made their college debuts for SBCC and they all had an impact. Chayton Clark had a team-high 13 digs, Justin Eitner had four kills and five digs, setter Peyton Raab had two kills and 17 assists and Zac Pittard, a 6-7 middle blocker, led the team in blocks with five.

Austin Lind, a 6-9 freshman from Santa Barbara High, hit .600 with seven kills and three blocks.

"Those four new players helped us a lot," said coach Jon Newton. "Peyton coming off the bench with a lot of energy and Justin playing all the around with good steady volleyball. Plus the addition of Zac and Chayton makes a huge difference."

The Vaqueros have a two-week break from competition, then they'll open WSC play on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Moorpark at 6 p.m.
