Opening Day Brings a Big Win for Cypress

CYPRESS, CA- Chargers baseball (1-0, 0-0 OEC) won their Opening Day matchup against the Pasadena City Lancers (0-1, 0-0 SCFA ) on Friday afternoon, 11-4.

Fans filled the seats at Cypress College with anticipation for a successful season. The top of the first saw starting pitcher Trey Seeley escape a no out bases loaded jam. After the top of the frame ended with no damage done,  the home crowd did not have to wait long for the team's first run. In the bottom of the first inning, the Chargers were able to fill the bags. Ryan White was hit by a pitch which gave Cypress the early lead and the designated hitter his first RBI of the year.

In the fourth, the Lancers tallied a run to tie the game, 1-1. But the home team jumped back in front in the bottom of the inning. A solo shot by shortstop Albert De La Rosa gave the Chargers the lead. Two innings later, Cypress started to pile it on. With another bases loaded opportunity, Edgar Rosales tripled to right, clearing the bases and extending the Cypress lead to 5-1. Later in the inning, lead off hitter Luke Honikel singled to score Kane Yonamine. A few batters after, Aaron Perez was hit by a pitch with bases loaded and made the score 7-1. With an already hefty lead, Perez got another chance with bases full. He unloaded on a pitch and hit a grand slam to help the Chargers go up by double-digits, 11-1. Pasadena City put up three runs in the ninth before the game ended, 11-4.

On an impressive Opening Day outing, the entire team contributed to their first win. Three Chargers had a multi-hit game in their first appearance. Lead hitter Honikel was 2-4 with an RBI, a walk and scored twice. Second baseman Rosales was also 2-4, knocking in 3 runs, a stolen bag and scored once. In Perez's four at bats he had 5 RBI's from his big grand slam swing.

On the pitching side, Trey Seeley picked up his first win of the season by going 3.2 innings, striking out six and only allowing one run. Evan Adolphus came in after, and shoved 2.1 without allowing a run and struck out three. Connor Wylde, Andrew Dusablon and Josh Laundry each got an inning of relief. The Chargers promising first win of the season showed their offensive abilities. Pitching worked to limit any damage after errors or walks throughout the game. Cypress won big in their first appearance and will play again at home in six days.
