COD Women’s Soccer shoots down the Condors for first time, 4-0

COD (2-1) grabbed their second win of the season and first win over the Oxnard Condors (0-3), wowing the home crowd in their 2019 home opener, shutting out and overwhelming the visitors, 4-0.

Desert had never hosted Oxnard until today, playing the Condors for the first time in 2001. The Roadrunners have a 1-2-1 all-time record against Oxnard.

The Roadrunners wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard as in the 7th minute, freshman defender Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) lobbed a pass to freshman forward Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.), who passed the ball forward to freshman midfielder Isabel Alvarez (Indio Shadow Hills), promptly putting the ball into the back of the net to give Desert a 1-0 lead.

It's a score that would hold through to halftime, as sophomore starting goal keeper Marqisha Zamudio-Ontiveros (Thermal Coachella Valley) had a clean sheet through 45 minutes.

In the 58th minute, the Roadrunners were awarded a penalty kick and Murguia capitalized on the opportunity to give Desert a 2-0 lead.

In the 70th minute, sophomore forward Jaidah Martin (Rancho Mirage H.S.) pushed a pass forward to Alvarez who rifled a shot past the diving Oxnard keeper to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead.

And Desert would wrap up the scoring in the 74th minute, when freshman midfielder Alejandra Fernandez (Cathedral City H.S.) found freshman forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) who touched a pass to Murguia for her second goal on the afternoon.

The next game for Desert is one week from today, Friday the 13th of September, when they host the defending CCCAA State Champs, the Santiago Canyon Hawks of Orange, at 4 p.m. The Roadrunners have never played Santiago Canyon in program history.
