Maddie Grissom's seventh-inning grand slam highlighted an 18-hit offensive attack as the West Valley softball team opened the 2021 season with a 14-2 win at Chabot Saturday afternoon.
 
Grissom had a 3-4, six-RBI, four-runs-scored outing. She opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single that knocked in Hannah Hillman, who led off the game with a single.
 
The Vikings added four runs in the second thanks to a two-run double from Tyavana Salazar and an RBI double from Cayla Williams. WVC added three more in the sixth on a two-run Michelle Gonzalez single that drove in Salazar and Airiel Silva.
 
With no outs in the top of the seventh, Grissom stepped to the plate with Alyscia Gil, Hillman and Jazmen Edwards, who had reached on a pinch-hit single, on base. Grissom's grand slam moved the Viking lead to 13-2. Bianca Ceja capped the scoring with an RBI single that scored Gonzalez.
 
Williams picked up the win in the circle, striking out five and surrending four hits in five innings of work. Salazar earned the save with a sparkling one-hit, two-K two innings of relief.
