Comets bring magic in comeback win

SAN MARCOS, CA (1/24/2020) – Palomar faced San Diego Miramar College Friday night and won 63-61 in a nail biter.

The Comets were down 12-0 nearly six minutes into the game. Jacob Durham was fouled and went to the line to score the first point for the Comets, a lone free throw. The Jets continue to roll until Noah Woodby entered the game. He hit a 3-pointer halfway through the first half to make the score 16-4. Three minutes later he had a layup to bring the score to 18-6. Woodby assisted Michael Brandon on a 3-pointer and then Woodby made another layup. Brandon made a layup and was fouled and made the free throw to complete the three-point play. Chris Howard then scored his first two points of the game. At halftime, the score was 31-19, in favor of the Jets.

Palomar came out in the second half with strong adjustments and were able to keep the Jets outside of the key. Miramar was shooting 48 percent in the field in the first compared to Palomar's 21.1 percent. The Comets were able to then shoot 62.5 percent from the field in the second and held the Jets to 37.9 percent. Palomar trailed Miramar through the bulk of the game. The Comets tied it up at 53 with 3:46 to go in the game and they kept control through the end of the game. Miramar had a chance to tie it with tenths of seconds left on the clock and the ball refused to go into the basket despite desperate attempts.

Zadok Wilson and Woodby were the leading scorers with 14 points for the Comets. Brandon finished with 13, Jason Danso had 11 and Chris Howard scored 10. Woodby finished the night with eight rebounds and Wilson had seven. Danso's crafty defense caused a lot of turnovers and Brandon was able to execute on the loose balls Danso tipped out of the Jets' hands.

Palomar improves to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Comets have a much-needed break on Wednesday and will be back in action on Friday night to face MiraCosta College at 7 p.m.
